| |||||||||||||
Terry Fox station is located adjacent to the Kanata Centrum shopping centre on the west transitway section and is the main terminus of Route 96 (some trips are extended to Stittsville) and most local routes in Kanata. 515 park and ride spaces are available on the west side of the station.
The station began service in September 2004, but was not officially opened until February 2005. Before the station's construction, a small terminal was located at Kanata Town Centre, located south of 417 on Katimavik Road.
Terry Fox Station is named after Terry Fox Drive, which in turn was named after Terry Fox, who was an athlete and cancer awareness advocate. In 1980, with one leg being amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run (named the Marathon of Hope) which was for the purpose of raising awareness for Cancer Research, as well as raising money. After 143 days and 5,375 km, his cancer spread to his lungs and forced him to end his run just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. He died nine months later.
