Elizabeth George Speare was born on November 21, in Melrose, Massachusetts. Young Elizabeth loved to read, spending long summers devouring books and dreaming about the characters she met there and her own made-up stories. She went to Smith College and Boston University, teaching high school English in Massachusetts after graduate school.
She married Alden Speare in and moved to Connecticut. Three years later their son, Alden, Jr., was born. Another three years saw the birth of their daughter, Mary. Mrs. Speare&#;s family spent a good deal of time out-of-doors camping, skiing, and hiking. She wrote that it wasn&#;t until her children were both in junior high that she had enough time during the day to fulfill her dreams of writing her own stories.
Her first book, Calico Captive, was published in The Witch of Blackbird Pond, her second book, about an imaginary girl from Wethersfield, Connecticut, in , when people believed in witches, won a Newbery Medal in Speare was awarded a second Newbery for The Bronze Bow in and a Newbery Honor in for The Sign of the Beaver. Elizabeth George Speare (November 21, – November 15, ) was an American writer of children's historical fiction, including two Newbery Medal winners, recognizing the year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children".[1] In she received the Children's Literature Legacy Award for her contributions to American children's literature[2] and one of the Educational Paperback Association's top authors.[3]
Life
[edit]Speare was born in Melrose, Massachusetts to Harry Allan and Demetria (Simmons) George. Her childhood, as she later recalled, was "exceptionally happy" and Melrose was "an ideal place in which to have grown up, close to fields and woods where we hiked and picnicked, and near to Boston where we frequently had family treats of theaters and concerts."[3]
She had an extended family with one brother and many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and most importantly, very loving and supportive parents. Speare lived much of her life in New England, the setting for many of her books.
Speare began writing stories while still in high school. After completing her Bachelor of Arts degree at Smith College in , she earned her Master's degree in English from Boston Universi
