Considered the founder of the Dutch school of Fijnschilderij, or fine painting, Gerrit Dou was born in Leiden on April 7, 1613. The son of a glazier and glass engraver, Dou was first trained by his father. For a year and a half, he was apprenticed to the copper engraver Bartholomeus Dolendo in 1622. Afterward, he trained with the glass painter Pieter Kouwenhoven for two years.
From 1628 to 1631, Dou studied with Rembrandt, adopting the master’s choice of subject matter and his use of impasto, careful draftsmanship, and dramatic treatment of light and shadow- e.g., “Rembrandt’s Mother” (c. 1630). After Rembrandt left Leiden in 1631, his influence on Dou gradually weakened. Gerrit Dou (pronounced[ˈɣɛrɪtdʌu]; 7 April 1613 – 9 February 1675), also known as GerardDouw or Dow, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, whose small, highly polished paintings are typical of the Leiden fijnschilders. He specialised in genre scenes and is noted for his trompe-l'œil "niche" paintings and candlelit night-scenes with strong chiaroscuro. He was a student of Rembrandt.
Life
[edit]Dou was born in Leiden, where his father was a manufacturer of stained-glass.[1] He studied drawing under Bartholomeus Dolendo, and then trained in the stained-glass workshop of Pieter Couwenhorn. In February 1628, at the age of fourteen, his father sent him to study painting in the studio of Rembrandt (then aged about 21) who lived nearby.[1] From Rembrandt, with whom he remained for about three years, he acquired his skill in colouring and in the more subtle effects of chiaroscuro, and his master's style is reflected in several of his earlier pictures, notably a self-portrait at the age of 22, around 1635–1638, in the Bridgewater Collection, and in the Blind Tobit going to meet his Son, at Wardour Castle [locations may be outdated].
