Although the present air traffic control system has an excellent track record for safety, the system reaches max capacity many times a day all across the US. When it does, controllers must delay flights in order to maintain safety. Such delays can ripple quickly across the country, resulting in lost productivity, wasted fuel and exasperated travelers. NASA Ames is conducting research to modernize the air transportation system, alleviate the choke points in today’s operations and maintain the free and efficient movement of people and goods. An overview of NASA’s Aviation Systems technology will be presented followed by discussion of an automation system designed to safely double the capacity of today’s system.
